THE ORIGINS AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE VU LAN FESTIVAL

Every July of the lunar calendar, hearts swell with deep gratitude toward parents and ancestors. Occurring annually on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, Vu Lan (Ullambana) originates from the Mahayana Buddhist script “Ullambana Sutra”, translated from Sanskrit to Chinese during the Western Jin Dynasty. Legend tells of Bodhisattva Maudgalyayana, whose mother was saved from the realm of hungry ghosts through the combined blessings of the Sangha following their summer retreat. Today, Vu Lan serves as a gentle reminder to honor ancestors, parents, and caregivers for their boundless devotion.
